Guest Poet “Carolee Jenkins”

I heard this poem last Wednesday (3/18/2009) and I was so moved by it I ask Carolee to share it with us:

Carolee Jenkins

Feb 28, 2009

FEMALE EXPERIENCE

styled on poem by Ntozake Shange

She was twelve n walkin home from school

When he showed from out of nowhere

Surprised her when he lifted his shirt/

Pulled out his tiny dick, n smiled as she

Ran home to the mama she knew wd be there/

Sobs in her throat tongue pantin

From runnin harder n she’d ever run before.

She threw open the front door,

Startled her mama who held a hot cookie/

Gurgled with pain as they hugged

Until she cd tell her ma bout that man

And his dick she cd not help seein

When he unzippt his pants n showed it.

*

It was many years later,

When she was in her thirties,

She told her mother dear

How much it meant to hr

To watch hr mama phone the police

N they came to the house right away/

To hear what happened

So she could almost/

Feel safe again.

I think it says something about our society when this poem was so familiar; does anyone else think this is a familiar theme, unfortunately?
